Redirect to homepage if link is invalid

Is there any "easy" way to have users redirected to the homepage if the link they have is to an "invalid id" or "invalid detail type"--or at the very least, I would love to have a way to obfuscate some of the details in this error page and have a message that has an explicit redirect to the search page or home page.

I was looking into adding a mod_rewrite rule as all of the idno's have a new standard encoding that all start with the same 4 characters, but I'm afraid that may cause some unintended consequences.

If you are using apache, read https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/custom-error.html about creating custom error pages. You can make a page that directs a user where to go from there.
