Hi Seth,
I would have liked to progress this, but following your previous advice above about disabling background processing etc, I then ran rebuild-search-index in cautils, only to find that the indexing repeatedly failed at 93% towards the end of the entities part of the process. I have been back into the entities from that number onwards and checked whether I could do anything, including re-labelling, because a couple of them were showing a label in use error. I copied the content of one of the entities away from CA and deleted the entity (having to delete the relationships first because otherwise it just processed and processed) and that then moved the "hang" to the next entity. This time I re-labelled and backed up content, but kept the entity in place. It wasn't until I deleted the image that rebuild-search-index progressed to the next entity, and hung there.
I suspect that, to be able to completely reindex, I may have to remove at least the images, but perhaps all the 12 or so entities with higher count numbers. At moment, hanging at 179/192
I know from past experience that without a successful re-index, the searches for related objects or entities don't work.
I am just hoping that this corruption of the database isn't more widespread. I do have backups, but that will cause me to lose the most recent work.
Meanwhile, in regard to your offer to look at our environment, it may be possible after some technical work happening soon to give you access to our IIS server without compromising security of the whole domain.
A less intrusive, but perhaps less helpful option, is for me to create you as a user on our Wordpress site. A plugin called WP File Manager will then enable you to download and inspect individual files within CA. There aren't all that many that are actually modified from default, apart from the contents of Media.
Would that level of access be any use?

Hi again. It does seem like something in your set up is incompatible with the newest version and being on windows would complicate matters. I'm further exploring the failure of re-indexing, and thinking there is some scrambling of the data for the last 12 or so entities. I am going to further investigate by removing relational links both from the entity and the object/entity to which the entity is linked for those last few entities. My thinking is that because the relationships have apparently broken down, they would need to be removed at both ends, given that the automatic processes don't work properly in the current situation. In earlier times, a re-indexing always managed to restore this. So not quite ready to go for the paid support option yet.

Progress! After failing rebuild-search-index countless times, I downloaded CA 2.05 and ran rebuild-search-index and a couple of other cautils before that, and finally, the re-indexing went right through. Now, if I want to add a related object to an entity, for instance, typing in the name of the entity brings up objects that also have that name.
This has at least given me a "back door" solution to the "upload media" problem which still isn't resolved. Because, as I discovered 2-3 weeks ago, I can upload photos to "photos and images" - one of our categories of Objects, so long as the image (filename?) includes the name of the entity, it finds it, and when I view the entity in Pawtucket, it shows the photo.

Another issue, likely related, is that if I open an existing entity in CA - one that was created under 1.7 with an image uploaded, the thumbnail at the top of the "Editing Individual" sidebar is not currently displaying - just a small icon at top left of the box where it used to appear. Clicking that icon successfully opens the image, but not within the thumbnail box. Some reading of past CA support threads suggests there may be a problem with tilepic?
Anyway, I am reassured that our database isn't corrupted, which I was starting to think when it was failing rebuild-search-index.
