I would love to hear how other people handle media that can have multiple sides or segments. If it is helpful at all we are creating a PBCore-compliant system.
In our database of broadcast audiovisual media, hundreds of objects may have a Side A and Side B, or have been captured in multiple segments. In these cases, we were thinking there could be one object that has multiple intellectual contents, one for each side or segment. We're wondering how this would interact with multiple object_representations. These are situations where each side or segment has notably different IC content that requires a full IC record.
We have many fields that have to do with capture information, such as capture ID, capture notes, capture operator, duration and more. Typically CA users attach fields like "capture duration" to the object, but we have been thinking these different durations are better linked to the object_representations. In a recent test, since each side of a captured tape had its own duration, attaching it to the object resulted in only the first duration getting imported and the second duration being excluded from the data.
We find the official broadcast program lengths, eg 59:30, etc, are best suited to the IC record, and are shorter than the capture length durations of each representation.
One solution might be, instead of connecting media/object_representations to the object, we could connect them to the IC. Then from there we could decide if it's a good idea to have some metadata elements like "capture duration" attached to the representation. We're unsure if treating the IC/object_occurrence in this way would be bad for the system in the long run, and also are wondering if any of you connect object_representations to both the object and the IC record. Your thoughts would be appreciated!
