Yes, in some case, I would like to use animated GIF.
It is because I make some 360° views of objects, and one easy way to export them is an animated GIF.
Another possibility is to export to mp4 movie, but it shows a play button ▶️ which I would like to avoid.
I think I managed to modify the media_display.conf file because it is indeed the animated GIF that is displayed when you click on the 2nd thumbnail, here:

In this example, the GIF is a concatenation of 36 images (10° angle per image).
(The 3rd thumbnail is a mp4 video demonstration of the object.)
